“get down on your knees”
What is so interesting about Grace Jones career is that there was no arc. There was a part one (lush gay disco), and a part two (post-punk dub). Here is an example of each:
Grace Jones - On Your Knees
As defined by her lover and art director Jean Paul Goude, Grace Jones was a woman who looked like a man who sang to rooms full of men who lusted for other men. And this was confusing for some people. Not gay people. Anyway, I love the lyrics of this song. Her lover has wronger her, and when he comes back, she makes him get down - on his knees!
Grace Jones - Nightclubbing
Once she made the transition to full on alien goddess, Grace was known for taking other people’s songs and making them all her own. Witness this hazy marijuana soaked cover of Iggy Pop’s song Nightclubbing. It’s darker, slower and far more dramatic than the original. Perfect for her audience and her image.
